New Research Links Severe Sleep Apnea to a 58% Higher Risk of Death in Diabetic Patients

A recent study from Charles University in Prague, published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, delivers a critical warning: diabetic patients with untreated severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) face a 58% higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to those without significant sleep disturbances.

Key findings from the study:

  • OSA & Mortality Risk: Untreated sleep apnea significantly increases death risk in diabetic patients.

  • Oxygen Saturation Matters: Maintaining an average oxygen level above 91.4% during sleep was associated with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.

  • Unique Risk Profile: Unlike the general population, sleep efficiency and REM sleep weren’t directly tied to mortality in diabetics—pointing to unique physiological dynamics.

With data from over 5,700 participants (including 453 with diabetes), this research underscores a growing concern: many diabetic individuals remain undiagnosed and untreated for sleep apnea. Early screening and intervention could be lifesaving.

If you have diabetes and experience loud snoring, poor sleep, or persistent fatigue, it may be time to get tested.
